Preparing Your Quilt for Machine Quilting will help insure a quick and trouble free project.
1. Backing should be at least 4" bigger on all four sides. Batting ( if you supply ) should be the same.
2. Identify the top of the quilt on both the quilt top and quilt back.
3. Both top and backing should be carefully pressed with seams open or going to one side.
Press seams toward darker fabric whenever possible, so they will not show thru your quilt top.
Top and backing should lie flat.
4. Check quilt top for seam breaks, as well as backing if seamed.
5. Quilt top and backing should be clipped of loose threads, both front and back. Remember, on
lighter fabrics, loose threads on the back side of the top may show thru.
6. Please remove all pins, buttons, or other embellishments.
7. Measure the center of the quilt top vertically. Then measure the outside edges vertically. If there
is more than a 1" difference, it is possible that your quilt will have tucks when quilted. Do the
same measurement horizontally. The most common reasons for measurement differences are
stretched bias edges and mitered corners that leave extra fabric on one or both sides of the miter.
Too much easement when piecing blocks can result in small tents or puckers, which will cause
tucks when the quilt is quilted. Proper squaring of the quilt top will result in a more evenly
covered quilt, and a superior quilt job.
